Sri (Ishwar) Tota Puri Baba

Sri (Ishwar) Tota Puri Baba, also called Nanga Baba Totapuri or “Languli Baba” was a naga-sannyasi of the Mahanirvani Akhara. “Tota” was his monastic name, and “Puri” denoted the subsect of the Dashnami Sampradaya, founded by Adi Shankaracharya, to which he belonged. Though he guided hundreds of sannyasins, he spent most of his life wandering—and today is remembered above all as the guru of Sri Ramakrishna. Legend says his pilgrimages across India and beyond spanned nearly a century. While meditating in the Himalayas, he received a divine call to travel to Calcutta and initiate Gadadhar, the head priest of the Dakshineswar Kali Temple. This divine encounter between the strict advaitic Tota Puri and the Kali bhakta Sri Ramakrishna not only transformed them both, but also stands as one of the most extraordinary examples of how seemingly opposite spiritual paths can converge into a single truth.
