Srila Gaura Kishor Das Babaji was a legend of the Gaudiya Parampara, modeling extreme humility and renunciation even as grandeur and opulence of every kind was waiting with folded hands to serve him. He once said, "Even [if] one is very great scholar, and if his spiritual master says that “You are a great fool,” he should accept it. This is called full surrender." He himself was illiterate, but it did not stop him from radiating the light of the scriptures. As he taught, "The Supreme Lord cannot be realized through worldly knowledge. Only through the chanting of the holy name can the true nature of the Lord be revealed. As the Lord is revealed from the letters comprising the Nama, the devotee gradually begins to understand his own nature and becomes acquainted with seva."
