At a time when society expected silence, she remained faithful to her spiritual experience. At a time when women were rarely encouraged toward scholarship, she became a theologian, poet, and philosopher. At a time when widowhood often meant social disappearance, she declared that her relationship with God was more real than any worldly status. And she lived accordingly.
