Swami Ghanananda Saraswati (1937–2016) was born in Ghana and became the first African Hindu sannyasi, carrying the light of Sanatan Dharma back to his homeland. After years of spiritual longing, he traveled to Rishikesh in the 1970s, where, under the guidance of Swami Krishnananda Saraswati, he immersed himself in yoga, philosophy, and monastic discipline. In 1975, he was initiated into the Hindu order and returned to Ghana, where he founded the Hindu Monastery of Africa—today with branches in Ghana and Togo. Swami Ghanananda dedicated his life to service, blending prayer and meditation with social upliftment: medical camps, eye screenings, and care for orphans and the sick.
