Some say he was blind. Others say he saw more than anyone alive. Surdas was born in the 15th century, somewhere between legend and history, and from early on he turned away from the visible world and toward an inner one blazing with Krishna. Abandoned by circumstance but adopted by song, he wandered North India singing of the blue-skinned child of Vrindavan — mischievous, tender, utterly divine. Under the guidance of Vallabhacharya, his poetry deepened into luminous devotion. His Sur Sagar poured out thousands of verses, where theology became lullaby and philosophy became love.
