Tradition

Gyaneshwar (Jnaneshwara & Dnyaneshwar are also correct), one of the most revered saints in Indian spirituality, was born in 1275 in Apegaon, Maharashtra, to Vithalpant and Rukminibai. His father had once been a renunciate but returned to family life on his guru’s command, an act that broke social norms and led to the family’s exile. In the midst of this hardship, four children were born — Nivruttinath, Gyaneshwar, Sopan, and Muktabai. They were the seeds of what eventually became the Varkari movement.
