Sri Avadhuta Pitchamma

Pichamma was born in 1870 in Kurumaddali, Gudivada taluka, Andhra Pradesh, to the devout couple Vadde Muttai and Veeramma. From childhood she showed unusual traits—speech difficulties, trance-like states, and mystical visions that puzzled her family and villagers. A wandering saint is said to have recognized her spiritual potential and guided her, after which she renounced worldly life completely. Her dwelling became a place of austerity where she lived as an ascetic—refusing meals, sometimes surviving on ashes or leaves, and showing no interest in possessions. Stories describe her profound samādhi states: snakes gently coiling around her like garlands, her clothes and the ground beneath her remaining dry even in pouring rain. Those who approached her felt uplifted simply by her silent presence.
