Guru Nanak Dev Ji is the founder of the Sikh tradition. Though he was raised at the intersection of different faiths, he ultimately rejected the traditions of existing paths in favor of his own internal calling. This calling crystallized one morning as he went to bathe in the Bein River – and disappeared for three days. When he came back, he was a changed man. He began traveling across India and beyond, spreading the message of Ik Onkar (one God, the supreme reality). This was the birth of Sikhi. When the time came to name his successor, he set an example for all leaders, passing over his own sons in favor of Guru Angad, whose humility and commitment to service was unmatched.
