Tradition

Nichidatsu Fujii lived through one of the most pivotal centuries of Japanese history and wrestled with many of the same contradictions. Born as the nation surged toward empire, he was drawn early to Buddhism and peace, even as he absorbed the rhetoric of power around him. For years he negotiated that tension, walking a line between ascetic devotion and imperial belief. History forced the reckoning. Hiroshima and Nagasaki broke the spell. What emerged was not denial, but transformation—a monk who had been shaped by his time, and then decisively broke free of it, turning prayer into public, uncompromising peace.
